Sergio “El Shaka” Vega, a Mexican singer known for his songs about the Mexican drug cartel culture, was killed this past weekend, a day after he went on a whirlwind media tour to refute rumors of his death.

Despite increased security, the 40-year-old Vega was gunned down by unknown assailants on his way to a concert in Mexico.The BBC speculates that Vega’s drug-related songs, called narcocorridos, may have been the reason behind the hit.Man, I definitely would not want to be a Mexican celebrity.
