Jon Stewart Does Glenn Beck, Traces News Corp’s GOP Donation

Since the Fox News guys love to follow the money, on last night’s Daily Show Jon Stewart busted out his chalkboard and now-classic Glenn Beck impression to trace a one-million-dollar donation from News Corp to the Republican Governor’s Association.

…AngryCanadian just said what’s on my mind. i will not click on another link to Cmedy Central again in another failed attempt to see the clip I want to see. Does Comedy Central have a problem with Canadians? foreigners? If not, why not just grant access or simply provide a link to the same episode on the substandard Canadian website? Can never find anything there!…

A Big Fat Thanks To Record Execs (PIC)

In their recent edition, Rolling Stone Magazine has issued a thank you letter to the record label executives. Hopefully they’ll read it and get the bigger picture.

…You can’t buy the music, only the container. Buying the music is like buying purple or hot.
If I go into a convenience store and put a bottle of Happy Springs water in my jacket, that is stealing. The Happy Springs company had to collect the water, bottle it, advertise it, and transport it to my location and sell it to the convenience store. That’s expensive and it would be morally wrong to take it without paying in nearly all circumstances.
What if the Happy Springs River runs across my property, is it stealing to fill my canteen? In my mind it is not morally wrong to take something that is (for this analogy) unlimited. It isn’t stealing because I haven’t taken anyone’s property, nor have I impeded anyone’s ability to sell their product.
Technology has obviated much of what record companies do. Yes, many people will lose their jobs as the record companies change form to adapt to the new technology, but the change will happen. Ask the pinsetters, coopers, telegraph operators and milkmen about it.
Musicians…

Fans Fill Graceland for Vigil Marking Elvis’ Death

Elvis Presley fans from around the world flocked to Graceland on Sunday for the annual late night procession past the king of rock ‘n’ roll’s grave. Presley died at his Graceland mansion Aug. 16, 1977.

…Thousands of Elvis admirers from around the world flocked to Graceland to attend the annual candlelight vigil and procession, which runs into the morning hours. Presley died at age 42 at his Graceland mansion on Aug. 16, 1977. Memorials started the following year.

(Photos: Elvis meeting President Nixon at the White House and other ill-advised meet-and-greets)

Elvis ballads like “If I Can Dream” and “Fools Rush In” played as participants solemnly filed in through the gates. Flowers and photos lined the entrance to the grave site, which also is the resting place of Presley’s father Vernon, his mother Gladys and grandmother Minnie Mae. Some people wiped tears from their faces as they walked past.

Thomas Hollis, 52, said he thought of his wife, who passed away in May from cancer. It’s his sixth Elvis vigil, but the first without his wife. Sunday was the couple’s 13th wedding anniversary.

Hollis’ granddaughter carried a candle for his wife.

“This vigil is kind of like for Elvis, and kind of like for…

Video Game Music as High Art?

These days, a lot of people in the classical music world are worried that kids aren’t connecting with orchestral music. But the music of video games is emerging as one way orchestras may actually be reaching new audiences.

…and “Video Games Live,” which aspires to be a kind of Cirque du Soleil of the field, started at the Hollywood Bowl in 2005.

These concerts vary from straight orchestral performances (”Distant Worlds”) to a more razzle-dazzle, Vegas-style entertainment experience (”Video Games Live”). They include vocal and instrumental soloists, full choruses and, of course, video clips.

They also include a symphony orchestra. It’s striking that video games, the ultimate pop medium, continue to rely on orchestral sound. “It brings a touch of class to what we do,” says Tommy Tallarico, the creator of “Video Games Live.” These shows, therefore, are presented in tandem with local orchestras — sometimes very good local orchestras. “Distant Worlds” will have been performed with the San Francisco Symphony and the Houston Symphony by the time it gets to the NSO on the show’s current tour.

For many in the audience, it may be the first exposure to a live orchestral performance. Tallarico, who has Donny Osmond-like clean-cut…

Artists lose out as fans stop burning CDs

Musicians, actors and other artists have seen their revenues from blank CDs and DVDs plummet as file sharers adapt their habits and embrace a range of technologies. As expected, the music industry is pushing for new fees that would add around us$15 to the cost of a mobile phone with 32 gigabytes of memory.

…When is the music industry going to die already??? Seriously, I can’t hear their complaints any longer. If your business model is broken, fix it. Don’t sue your customers.I don’t file share. But I used to by a lot of blank DVDs, CDs etc. not any longer. Why? Right, a CD is way to small to backup my data. And BluRays just won’t work for me (thank music industry for making this format unusable!). So I backup my data (my own photos to be precise) differently. So now the music industry is not making money any longer of my private photos. And now these guys complain… GIVE US A BREAK Music Industry - adapt your model or please please just go away. But spare us your stupid complaints about that technology evolves……

John Lennon is seen in this undated photo taken by Sue Baker during one of her visits to the Beatles’ homes as a teenager in the 1960s.

As a teenager, Baker tracked down Paul McCartney’s London home, and the singer wrote down the addresses of the other Beatles for her. She then began visiting and photographing the other members of the Fab Four at their homes. She kept up her visits from 1965 to 1967, according to Britain’s Telegraph, and the pictures she took during those visits are set to be sold at auction in Reading, England, on Aug. 3, 2010. Lady Gaga and the ‘Dangerous’ Circle Lens Craze

The obsession with all things Lady Gaga has touched the ophthalmology world with the disturbing popularity of “circle lenses” — unusually large contact lenses which give the wearer the big-eyed look Gaga sported in her “Bad Romance” music video. Doctors warn that the unregulated lenses could cause infections and lead to blindness.

…The obsession with all things Lady Gaga has touched the ophthalmology world with the disturbing popularity of “circle lenses” unusually large contact lenses which give the wearer the big-eyed look Gaga sported in her “Bad Romance” music video. Doctors warn that the unregulated lenses, sold on the internet as cosmetic enhancements, could cause infections and lead to blindness. Is this “eyeball as accessory” trend taking Gaga-mania a step too far? (Watch an ABC report about “circle lenses”)How do circle lenses work? Unlike standard contact lenses, which cover only the eye’s colored portion (the iris), circle lenses extend slightly into the whites of the eye, creating the illusion of a larger iris. While you can buy circle lenses (at $20-30 a pair) that look plausible, they are also available in frankly fake neon hues and pseudo-mystical…
